Nyakach hospital seeks to dispose unclaimed bodies

Nyakach sub county hospital administration has issued a notice seeking to dispose of seven unclaimed bodies that have overstayed at the facility’s mortuary.

The notice issued by the Nyakach sub-county public health officer Marie Amollo, urges the general public to urgently visit the facility and identify the bodies of the deceased.

“This notice takes 21 days from January 21 to February 12, 2025 upon which internment will be done to the seven unclaimed bodies through a court order without further notice as per public health Act cap 242,” the document read in part.

According to Amollo, some of the unidentified bodies have stayed in the morgue for more than 6 months piling pressure on the facility’s small capacity.

She said the hospital aims to locate families or next of kin for the unidentified bodies so that they can be accorded decent burials.

“We understand that the departed individuals may have families who are searching for them. This notice is therefore an opportunity to reunite families and provide a dignified final resting place for them,” emphasized Amollo.

The list of the unclaimed bodies includes five unknown males and a female, all adults and another one adult identified as that of David Onyango Echwa, received on August 4, 2024.

She encouraged members of the public to visit the Nyakach hospital mortuary, Kisumu county during official working hours to help identify any of the unclaimed bodies.
