Athletics trainees from across Nyandarua and neighbouring counties gathered at Nyahururu Stadium Thursday for an intense practice session as part of their regular training schedule.
Among the participants were teams from the Administration Police (AP), local athletic clubs, and independent runners striving for excellence.
One of the most dedicated local teams on the field was the Nyahururu Jakes Club, which showed great commitment under the guidance of their coach, Lawrence Njuguna Waire.
According to Njuguna, despite their determination, the team faces significant challenges. “We’ve had difficulties, especially in terms of finances. The trainees have to rely on themselves for accommodation, transport, and all other expenses,” he said. Florence Wachira, the only female trainee in Jakes Club during the session, expressed gratitude for the support she received from her male teammates. “Ever since I joined the club, I’ve been happy. The team’s support is incredible,” said Florence, who hails from Nyandarua County.
Among the top trainees was Simon Mungai, a runner from Eldama Ravine, Rift Valley, currently based in Laikipia.
A rising star in long-distance running, Mungai has transformed his athletic talent into a career. “I started athletics because it’s my talent, but now it has become my profession,” noted Mungai.
His dedication has paid off, earning him a third-place finish in the National Cross Country Championships.
However, Mungai complained of the financial and physical hardships that athletes had to endure, adding, “Trainees suffer injuries on the field, and there is inadequate financial support.”
With better financial backing and resources, these runners could soon make a mark on the national and international stage.
