North Eastern leaders rally residents ahead of vaccination drive

Leaders from North Eastern counties have urged residents to prepare for and actively participate in the upcoming nationwide livestock vaccination drive, set to begin January next year.

The program aims to combat prevalent diseases, improve productivity, and secure the livelihoods of pastoralist communities.

Speaking during the annual Al Huda Quran competition in Mandera County, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Aden Duale emphasized the importance of the initiative.

He highlighted that the vaccines, manufactured by the reputable Kenyan company Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute (KEVEVAPI), are critical for protecting livestock and enhancing pastoral economies.

“Our communities in North Eastern Kenya depend heavily on livestock. Vaccinating these animals is vital for their health and productivity. This initiative will also open up new markets for our livestock beyond Kenya,” said CS Duale, describing the program as a transformative opportunity for pastoralists in the region.

Mandera Governor, Mohamed Khalif, affirmed the county’s commitment to the vaccination campaign and pledged to lead the effort locally.

However, he cautioned against misinformation being spread by self-serving politicians who, he said, are discouraging farmers from embracing the program.

The campaign, spearheaded by the Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute (KEVEVAPI) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Production, will cost an estimated Sh193 million.

The initiative aims to vaccinate approximately 22 million cattle against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and 50 million sheep and goats against Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR).

Residents were encouraged to work closely with veterinary officers to ensure the program’s success and safeguard the region’s critical livestock sector.
