A prisoner has thanked the Nominated Senator for Isiolo, Abshiro Halake for paying cash bail for six inmates who had committed minor offences.
A beneficiary of the the MP’s gesture, Eric Mutembei was thankful that the Senator gave them food, facilitated their health checkups besides paying for their bails as Madaraka and Idd-ul-fitr celebrations gift.
He said one of the freed inmates had multi drug resistant Tuberculosis-TB that could have been spread to the rest of them but the senator bailed him out and made sure he accessed medication and isolation.
The Senator said on Tuesday that the gesture to share with the inmates coincided with Madaraka and Idd-ul-fitr celebratory season and it was important to enjoy their freedom too.
Senator Abshiro said that the reason as to why she did this was because she realized most of the Kenyan prisons were flooded by minor offenders, who could not afford their cash bails and who end up spending more of the tax payers money for sustenance in prison than they could have paid for bail.
She promised to provide work material and tools to those who were released to go and start jobs with the skills acquired while in prison so as to earn an income to sustain them, as she believes most of them are in prison due to poverty.
Abshiro also promised to provide means of access to information in the prison like televisions as per the prisoners request in order for them to know what was happening in the country.
Accompanying the Senator were, Lucy Mworia who had contested Isiolo North Parliamentary Seat in last election and Sheikh Ahmed Set who is a cancer survivor.
They urged the prisoners to get screened for cancer when another medical camp will be held at the facility and advised them to reform and know God.
