New administrative unit to boost security in West Pokot

The establishment of a new administrative unit in the Ombolion area of North Pokot Sub-County, West Pokot County is set to significantly enhance security and government services to citizens.

The administrative unit will accommodate law enforcement officials, including police officers, the Assistant County Commissioner, the area chief and his assistants, as well as national police reservists, and is expected to have several positive impacts, according to locals and government officials.

During a press briefing, Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Emily Ogolla, representing West Pokot County Commissioner Abdullai Khalif, expressed gratitude to the government for financing the critical initiative through the ministry of Interior.

ACC Ogolla said the establishment of the administrative unit aims to enhance citizen’s access to government services and effectively address security in the region, which has historically faced challenges related to crime and inter community conflicts.

She emphasized that the increased administrative officers’ presence will enhance peace and stability, particularly in areas identified as hot-spots for cattle rustling and warrior activities.

She reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing crime and banditry, urging residents to foster a spirit of peaceful coexistence.

‘‘The government is not going to permit attacks associated with banditry and cattle rustling to emerge in the villages along border counties,’’ stated ACC Ogolla.

She commended the local community for their role in maintaining peace and cautioned the few individuals who disrupt the tranquility, encouraging all communities in border areas to prioritize peaceful relations.

She highlighted that the new administrative unit is expected to provide officers with adequate facilities, thereby bolstering security operations within the Ombolion area.

ACC Ogolla called on the community, led by the area chief to collaborate closely with the contractor to guarantee the project’s smooth progression.

She urged the construction team to adhere to high-quality standards, assuring regular inspections to keep the project on schedule and within budget.

Community members expressed enthusiasm over the project during the site handing over ceremony.

Benson Loyeye, a nurse at the Ombolion health dispensary, remarked that the administrative unit would significantly enhance safety and security, facilitating socioeconomic development in the village and surrounding areas.

He indicated that previous insecurity had led many locals to abandon their homes and businesses, but ongoing peace initiatives by the government have encouraged residents to return.

Simon Nalomai, a resident, noted that the presence of the new administrative unit will enable children to attend school without fear of attacks.

He described the past as a battleground between bandits and locals, which rendered the village a daunting place to reside.

Nalomai expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts to ensure that peace prevails in the region, highlighting the positive impact of the National Police Reservist (NPR) program in restoring stability.

Shadrack Mwangi, a representative from the construction company, announced that the project is scheduled for completion within six to eight months, with work set to commence immediately.

He also mentioned that the company plans to employ local residents during the construction phase, providing them with employment opportunities to support their families.
