The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued stern warning to Homa Bay Water and Sewerage Company (HOMAWASCO) to ensure that they maintained their sewer lines within Homa Bay Town and its environs.
Speaking to KNA on Saturday, the NEMA County Director, John Maniafu said that the town is now polluted with foul smell emanating from leaking sewer lines, thus polluting the environment.
Muniafu regretted that the high number of leakage points along the sewer lines is due to poor maintenance of the system by the company, causing effluent discharge to Lake Victoria which is dangerous to aquatic life.
The director further said that most sewer lines in Homa Bay Town have blockages and a lot of sewage waste spewing all over thereby, exposing residents to cholera and other waterborne diseases.
He told the company to step up constant inspection of the sewer lines in the area to ensure they are well maintained to avoid pollution of the environment.
