Needy families benefit from relief food in Laikipia informal settlements

About 2000 needy families in Likii and Majengo informal settlement in Laikipia County have benefited from a donation of relief food, aimed at cushioning them from hunger, amid the on-going rainfall.

Majority of those benefitted were adversely affected by the recent floods that swept away homes and destroyed their properties, leaving them in devastating situations.

Speaking during the food aid donation exercise in Likii, Laikipia East Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Muli said that elderly, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and most needy cases also benefitted.

“We have donated relief food to the elderly and those who have no one to support them and PWDS. About 2,000 people have benefitted with each receiving four kilograms of both rice and beans,” said Muli.

He pointed out that the food items donated by the government to the needy families included rice and beans that would sustain them for about a week.

He cautioned the beneficiaries against selling government relief aid noting it was only meant to support their livelihood.

The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude, adding that rains had halted their regular incomes, hence leaving them in a grim situation.

“I am grateful to our government for supporting us during these difficult times, I am one of those whose property was destroyed by floods, hence this food aid is a boost to me,” said Jacinta Mumbi, one of the beneficiaries.
