Narok town residents have been warned against buying uninspected meat following reports that some butcheries were selling meat that was unfit for human consumption.
Narok Central Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Ali Shakur confirmed that some butchers were selling unauthorised meat to unsuspecting members of the public.
He confirmed that one person had been arrested at Midland Butchery in Narok town while selling uninspected meat and he was expected to be arraigned in court, where he will be charged with contravening public health laws.
“Acting on a tip-off, I led the police and local chief to raid Midland Butchery along the Nyawera Road, where we established that the joint was selling uninspected cow meat,” he said.
The public health officers were called to inspect the meat, where they confirmed that the meat was not fit for human consumption.
Mulot slaughterhouse in Narok West Sub County was recently reopened after months of closure after the public health officers and livestock officers found it selling unfit meat to the members of the public.
Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia warned the public health officers against being reluctant in carrying out their responsibilities and directed them to be aggressive in inspecting all the slaughterhouses and butcheries in the county to avoid exposing unhealthy meat to the members of the public.
The CC advised livestock farmers whose animals fall sick and die to find better ways of disposing of the carcasses other than taking sickly animals to slaughterhouses, where they end up being slaughtered and the meat consumed by unsuspecting customers.
“The public health officers should make regular impromptu visits to all slaughterhouses and butcheries. Any butchery selling meat without the official stamp should be closed immediately,” he said.
Also, the members of the public were asked to be on high alert and report any farmer who transports a sickly animal to the slaughterhouses.
