Nakuru County is urging its youth to capitalize on available resources designed to foster skills and economic growth, despite the significant challenges they face.
This call to action was highlighted during a meeting held at Kiamunyi in Menengai West Ward, where County Government representatives engaged with residents on youth empowerment and development.
Nakuru County Chief Officer for Public Participation, Edward Gitau, emphasized the underutilization of key facilities, including Youth Empowerment Centers, the Nakuru Textile Hub, and the county music studio.
He stressed their potential to generate employment and nurture talent, urging young people to leverage these resources to develop their skills and boost their economic prospects.
The urgency of Gitau’s message is underscored by the numerous challenges facing Nakuru’s youth. These include: Many young people struggle to find meaningful employment, leading to frustration and economic hardship, limited access to capital for starting businesses or pursuing entrepreneurial ventures is difficult due to restricted access to funding and financial resources.
A significant number of youths are affected by substance abuse, which hinders their productivity and overall well-being. Many young people lack access to experienced mentors who can provide guidance and support in their career paths.
Other hindrances include inadequate infrastructure, especially in the remote areas, there is a lack of adequate infrastructure that would help to drive economic growth and create work opportunities. Sometimes the youth are unable to access opportunities due to political influence and nepotism.
The County Government’s push for youth empowerment comes as a crucial intervention to address these challenges. By encouraging the utilization of its resources, the county aims to equip young people with the tools they need to overcome obstacles and build successful futures.
Beyond youth empowerment, Gitau assured Menengai West residents of the county’s commitment to continuous development, particularly in infrastructure.
He highlighted the ongoing road improvements under the Imarisha Barabara program, emphasizing their role in enhancing connectivity and promoting economic growth. He further assured residents of Menengai West that more road development was coming soon.
