In a concerted effort to combat climate change and enhance local environmental sustainability, Nakuru Town East schools today participated in a significant tree-planting exercise.
St. John’s Comprehensive, Teachers Primary and Natewa High School was a beehive of activities as students, teachers, and community members joined hands to plant a variety of trees on their school grounds.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Menengai Ward Climate Change Committee, with notable presence from the Nakuru Town East Environment Officer Mr. Kimotho Mungai.
Mungai commended the schools for their enthusiastic involvement and highlighted the crucial role of students, particularly those actively engaged in environmental clubs, in driving positive change.
“The collaborative spirit demonstrated by these schools is truly commendable. It is through such joint efforts between schools and communities that we can make a tangible difference in environmental conservation,” Mungai remarked during the event.
He further emphasized the importance of close collaboration with the Ward Climate Change Committee, urging all stakeholders to work together to implement sustainable practices.
Mungai encouraged the attendees to leverage the World Bank’s Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) programme to enable them to make more impact.
“The FLLoCA funds present a valuable opportunity for schools and communities to undertake projects that enhance climate resilience and adaptation. I encourage everyone to explore these resources and leverage them for impactful environmental initiatives,” he said.
The event witnessed active participation from school principals, Environment Department staff and community members, underscoring the collective commitment to a greener future.
The tree-planting exercise not only aims to increase tree coverage but also aligns with broader climate action strategies, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient environment for future generations.
