Nakuru Rugby club gears up for great Rift 10s with major funding boost

The Nakuru Rugby Football Club (NRFC) has received a significant financial boost, bolstering their preparations for the highly anticipated Great Rift Nakuru 10s tournament, scheduled for April 19th-20th, 2025, at the iconic Nakuru Athletics Club.

The club secured a substantial Sh500,000 donations from the Office of the Governor, Nakuru County, a move hailed as a testament to the county’s commitment to sports development. This funding is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the team’s training regime and ensuring the smooth execution of the tournament, a key fixture in the regional rugby calendar.

Adding to the financial support, prominent Nakuru businessman David Kanene contributed Sh100,000, further demonstrating the community’s backing for the local rugby scene.

The Great Rift Nakuru 10s tournament is renowned for attracting top-tier rugby talent and passionate fans from across Kenya, placing Nakuru firmly on the sporting map. The tournament not only provides thrilling entertainment but also serves as a crucial platform for youth development and empowerment through sports.

The significant financial support extended to NRFC underscores the pivotal role sports play in Nakuru’s socio-economic development. Beyond the thrill of competition, sports foster discipline, teamwork, and resilience among young people. It also generates economic activity through tourism, hospitality, and related industries.

“Sports are a powerful tool for social cohesion and youth empowerment,” stated Martin Kagai, Chief Officer in the Office of the Governor, during a brief presentation ceremony. “The county government is committed to investing in sports infrastructure and supporting local clubs like NRFC, which play a vital role in nurturing talent and promoting healthy lifestyles.”

The presence of key political figures at the event, including Geoffrey Kamau (PA to the First Gentleman), Macharia Wathiai, MCA for Shabab Ward, Fadhili Msuri, MCA for Biashara Ward, and Francis Njoroge from the political office, highlighted the government’s dedication to the success of the tournament and the development of sports within the region.

NRFC officials and players expressed their gratitude for the generous contributions, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on their preparations and the overall success of the Great Rift Nakuru 10s. The tournament is expected to draw large crowds, boosting local businesses and showcasing Nakuru as a premier sports destination.
