Nakuru County Government has issued a strong call to action, demanding an end to harmful practices, discrimination, and marginalization faced by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
In a renewed commitment today, the county administration pledged to fully integrate disability issues into all its programmes.
Speaking during a press conference in her office, County Chief Officer for Gender, Social Services and Inclusivity Ms. Gladys Kamuren, highlighted the county’s ongoing efforts to combat stigmatization.
“The County administration, under the leadership of Governor Susan Kihika, is actively addressing the challenges faced by PWDs through the development of progressive policies, innovative programmes, and robust collaboration with key stakeholders,” she stated.
Ms. Kamuren emphasized the administration’s commitment to empowering PWDs through initiatives such as the Enterprise Fund, which provides financial support, and the utilization of digital platforms to facilitate access to assistive devices and fee waivers.
Notably, the county’s Health Department has implemented subsidized treatment for autism across all sub-counties, aiming to improve accessibility for Nakuru residents.
Chair of the National Council for PWDs Elizabeth Chesang expressed gratitude to organizations partnering with the government to provide vital resources and support.
She underscored the importance of normalizing conversations surrounding mental health across the nation.
Advocacy groups representing individuals with autism and neurodevelopmental disabilities urged the public to recognize and treat PWDs as equals, capable of contributing meaningfully to society.
“We must shift the narrative and acknowledge the potential and abilities of PWDs,” a spokesperson stated.
The meeting, which also provided a platform for PWDs to showcase their diverse talents, was attended by officials from both national and county governments, as well as representatives from NGOs.
Attendees were treated to performances including songs and poems and displays of artistic prowess in weaving and drawing, highlighting the capabilities and creativity of individuals within the disability community.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusion and the need for continued efforts to dismantle barriers faced by PWDs.
