Mwea Constituency is set to benefit from the construction of a sh24 million Huduma Centre and Jitume Digital Hub.
The facility, expected to be completed by February 2025, had its official groundbreaking ceremony today. It is expected to bring essential government services closer to residents, enhancing access to critical services and improving the digital capacity of the constituency.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Mary Maingi, Member of Parliament for Mwea Constituency, emphasised the transformative impact the new centre will have on the community.
“Residents of Mwea will no longer have to travel long distances to access government services. This centre will drastically reduce turnaround times and significantly improve service delivery efficiency,” said Maingi.
She said the Huduma Centre will house various government services under one roof, while the Jitume Digital Hub will provide digital resources and training opportunities to empower the youth and local entrepreneurs.
The event drew a large crowd from across the constituency, with residents expressing gratitude for the positive change this initiative will bring to their daily lives.
The MP said the office of the MP through NG-CDF will support the Jitume Hub through buying computers for the Hub, saying the Kenya Kwanza government is committed to helping more youth come to self-reliance because there is a lot in the digital space for youths.
Maingi wished all candidates from Mwea constituency and all over the country success in their exams, saying her office will support the learners where possible.
She also highlighted her ongoing efforts to support local public primary schools, particularly during the current exam period where her office will continue with the feeding programme in their schools.
“We have been providing food to all primary schools in the constituency to ensure that candidates sitting for their exams are well fed and can focus on their studies. A hungry student cannot perform at their best, and we are committed to making sure they are nutritionally supported during this crucial time,” she said.
Purity Mengich, the Assistant County Commissioner (ACC), echoed the MP sentiments, stating that the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to improving access to critical services for all Kenyans, particularly those in rural areas like Mwea.
“Today’s groundbreaking is a testament to the government’s promise to bring essential services closer to the people,” said ACC Mengich.
Purity also said the digital hub will support youth in the area by providing online basic skills, therefore calling on youth to take advantage of the hub once it’s completed.
Titus Karanja, a resident from Mwea constituency, says the Huduma centre will be of great benefit to all Mwea residents, saying they have been walking for long distances to get government services.
“We have been going to Kerugoya town and Embu County to get government services when one is in need, and it has been so hectic and expensive to us. The process also has been time-consuming since we have to spend a whole day,” said Karanja.
Karanja said the Jitume Centre will help youth create more employment opportunities for themselves. Saying it will change the lives of the residents in different ways.
