Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner, David Gitonga has decried the resurgence of illicit brews and their negative impact on the county security.
Speaking during a consultative meeting on alcohol, drugs, and substance abuse held at Kathwana Social Hall, yesterday the County Commissioner undertook to lead a crackdown on the vice for the safety of the community during this festive season.
Gitonga emphasized the county’s commitment to eradicating illicit brews, stating that the multi-agency team will intensify efforts to combat their manufacture and consumption besides all other illegal activities until the county is safe for all residents and visitors.
“There is need for maximizing surveillance to ensure adequate security for the community during the Christmas holidays,” stressed the Senior Administrator.
He further elaborated on the coordination of government projects and programs, including the registration of community members for the new Taifa Care health program.
The sentiments were echoed by the County Deputy Governor, Nyaga Muisraeli who stressed the need to protect the community from unscrupulous merchants especially during the festive season.
Muisraeli pledged to spearhead the fight against the sale of alcohol to minors, unlicensed alcohol vendors, and the sale of alcohol during the prohibited hours.
He urged business owners to cooperate with authorities in combating illegal alcohol and encouraged residents to enjoy Christmas responsibly.
The County Deputy boss further warned the residents, especially the youth, against behavior that could lead to premature pregnancies and venereal diseases.
Muisraeli assured residents that security measures are in place and ready to be enforced.
Present during the event was the NACADA County Coordinator, Amos Warui who appreciated, the ongoing partnership with local authorities to create a safe community free from drugs and illicit alcoholic drinks
Warui reminded parents to be role models to their children and urged the youth to be cautious during the festive season.
He emphasized the importance of enhanced enforcement to prevent the return of counterfeit and second-generation drinks while ensuring that those taking advantage of the festive season to make quick profits do not succeed.
Warui further revealed NACADA’s efforts in developing a national plan for implementation during the holiday season, aimed at curbing alcohol abuse and promoting road safety.
He said NACADA, in collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), is working to address issues related to driving under the influence (DUI) and ensure safer roads during the festive season.
