More than 60 smallholder farmers and five farming groups in Nyang’oma Masogo Ward, Muhoroni Sub-County have received climate-smart seeds and fertilizers in an effort to promote climate-resilient agriculture.
This initiative aims to help farmers adapt to erratic rainfall patterns and sustain food production despite the changing climate in the lakeside county.
The intervention, spearheaded by the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) project, is designed to shield local farmers from the adverse effects of climate change, which has led to unpredictable weather patterns, prolonged droughts, and rising concerns over food security.
Speaking during the distribution event at Nyang’oma Centre on Wednesday, Kisumu County Climate Change Officer Beatrice Okello emphasized the significance of the farm inputs in enhancing farmers’ resilience to climate shocks while maximizing agricultural productivity.
“The FLLoCA-funded project empowers smallholder farmers to adapt to changing weather conditions, ensure sustainable production, and improve food security,” Okello stated.
Farmers from groups including Mine Nyalo Farmers Group, Special Smile Group, Sky Farmers, Nyang’oma Victory Farmers, and Upendo Farmers, alongside 60 individual households, received maize, beans, and various vegetable seeds, as well as CAN and DAP fertilizers.
One of the beneficiaries, Caleb Okumu, expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the farm inputs would significantly enhance agricultural production and strengthen food security in Nyang’oma and surrounding areas.
