The Mtangani GK Prison in Malindi will be among the first prisons to be expanded in the countrywide GK Prisons’ decongestion plans, the Commissioner General for Prison, Wycliffe Ogola has said.
According to Ogola, the prison will get first priority for expansion following its unprecedented congestion levels
occasioned by its upgrading into a maximum prison.
He also noted the upgrading of Malindi Court to a High Court which serves Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu counties was also a factor in the increase of prisoners at Mtangani Prison.
He revealed that money has already been set aside for the expansion of the prison and the works will start next financial 2019/2020.
“I am going round the whole Country inspecting the accommodation condition of the prisoners for necessary action,” he said
