MP embarks on removal of asbestos roofs in primary school

In accordance with the Ministry of Environment recommendations on the immediate removal of asbestos from buildings, Nyeri town Member of Parliament, Duncan Maina, has embarked on a drive to rid local primary schools in his Constituency of the health hazardous material.

The first beneficiary of this initiative was Kwanderi Primary in Nyeri town, where the Legislator issued iron sheets worth Sh 5.4 million to replace the dilapidated roof.

Speaking at the school grounds where he handed over the project to the school management, Maina said the project is aimed at enhancing the institution’s standard of education by providing modern equipment and facilities courtesy of the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) for Nyeri town.

The MP was apprehensive that the asbestos roof posed a great risk of cancer, adding that: “We are changing this to rescue our environment,  our children and the local community from the hazards of asbestos.”

During the same function he encouraged parents to enroll their children to the school, saying he would strive to ensure it improves its results.

He also cautioned teachers against being reluctant in performing their duties in tandem with their performance contract.
