The Mombasa Combined boxing team will compete in the East African club championships for the coveted regional titles.
Speaking in Mombasa Town when the team departed for Tanga, Tanzania, Head Coach Peter Onyango said that the team was well prepared for the tournament given that they have had ample time to train and prepare the boxers adequately.
Onyango added that a total of sixteen Kenyan boxers would participate in the 4-day competition that has also drawn participants from South Africa and Malawi.
“We expect to do exceptionally well in the competitions in Tanga. My boxers have been in camp training for the games, and I have confidence they will give good performances and clinch medals for the country,” said Onyango.
He added that this year’s edition would feature junior segments which the championships aimed to use as nurturing grounds for the young and inexperienced boxers.
This would be the third time the Mombasa Combined team would be featuring in the championships having clinched two gold medals in the last two editions.
The Head Coach exuded confidence that the experienced boxers in the team would be at hand to deliver victory and bag gold medals.
“In the last two editions, our experienced fighters have successfully won two gold medals which we intend to defend and retain the bragging rights,” added Onyango.
Team Captain Kombo Mwinyi urged all boxing fans in the country to rally behind the team and expect good results from the team in Tanga.
Kombo said an international competition of this stature required proper preparations which he believes the team under the guidance of their technical trainers have done.
“We have been tested and proven in the last two championships having bagged two gold medals. This gives us an edge over other teams because of the experience we possess,” said Mwinyi.
