A 10 year old girl from Mosiro, Kajiado County is recovering at Naning’oe Primary school rescue centre after being rescued from early marriage.
According to Kajiado North Sub County Children’s Officer Stanley Rotich, the minor who was a class two pupil was married off to a 35 year old man.
Rotich told KNA Monday in Ngong that medical investigations showed that the minor had a wound after undergoing the outlawed Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
However, he added, “Investigations are still ongoing though we shall transfer the girl to a better centre where she can get psychological counselling and close monitoring by the children’s department,” he said.
Children’s Officer noted that the victim had been taken into hiding 70 kilometres away from her village but the children officers and police managed to trace her.
He said reports indicated that Assistant Chief in Esonorua of Kajiado West has been interdicted since he was allegedly involved in attending marriage celebrations of the minor instead of reporting and rescuing the underage girl.
Rotich said though it is the work of administrators to protect children from female cut and early marriages some local chiefs were still promoting the outlawed cultural practices.
Similarly, in a separate incident, the Assistant Chief for Esageri Sub location has been interdicted after he allegedly assaulted the area senior chief for fighting illegal brews.
The assistant chief who was arraigned in Ngong Law Court on Friday denied the assault charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh15,000 and a bond of Sh30,000.
Kajiado West Deputy County Commissioner William Kakimoi confirmed the incident.
