Minor drowns in Lake Victoria

An 11-year-old boy has drowned while another one aged 15 years was rescued from Lake Victoria at Pier Beach in Homa Bay Town constituency.

The deceased identified as Santos Okoth, a class five pupil and his colleague who survived identified as Victor Omondi, a class eight pupil both at Maguti primary School, were swimming in the Lake at about mid-day on Saturday when the incident occured.

According to the grandfather of the children Mbai Odero, the children had been sent to sell charcoal in Homa Bay town when the incident happened.

Odero added that the rescued was rushed to Homa Bbay county referral hospital where he was treated and discharged.

He appealed to well-wishers to come to his aid in searching for the body in the waters, which continue to swell.

His sentiments were also supported by Homa Bay West ward ODM Youth leader Opiyo Soso who challenged the department of Disaster Management in the County to come out and assist the family members in tracing the body.

Confirming the incident to KNA, assistant chief of Homa Bay Township sub location Dancun Odhiambo said, the minors who hail from Maguti village in Homa Bay Town West Ward slid into the lake at a bridge near Capital Fish Factory , which is now covered with water due to the rising water level of Lake Victoria .

Odhiambo further revealed that Victor was immediately rescued by a man who was bathing under the same bridge while his colleague died on the spot.

The administrator said that the body of the deceased has not yet been recovered while the search operation is in progress.
