The Ministry of Education on Wednesday announced that it will soon launch a nationwide dialogue on the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
The Education Cabinet Secretary (CS), Prof. George Magoha urged all stakeholders to be part of this crucial national conversation to ensure successful implementation of the new curriculum.
‘’Implementation of the CBC requires that I engage all players as the curriculum gradually gets rolled out to higher
grades,’’ said Prof. Magoha.
The remarks were contained in a speech read on his behalf by Kenya’s Ambassador/Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Phyllis Kandie during the 5th Kenya National Commission for UNESCO stakeholders’ conference and validation of 2019-2023 Strategic Plan at Mombasa Continental Resort.
The CS said the government was committed to successfully implementing the CBC which underscores the need to ensure all learning is made contextually for every learner’s holistic growth and development.
‘’It is envisaged that this will lead to independent, confident, cooperative and inspired learners who can apply their
learning to make constructive contributions as productive responsible citizens.’’
Prof. Magoha called on UNESCO and the entire UN family to be part of the critical stakeholders’ consultations during the CBC implementation period, saying his ministry was focused on delivering quality education that empowers citizens with requisite skills.
The CS noted that his ministry recognizes the key role played by UNESCO in enhancing a culture of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information.
Saying education is one of the major programmes in UNESCO, Prof. Magoha commended the organization for playing a key role in promoting quality and inclusive lifelong learning.
‘’It is for this reason UNESCO has been charged with the responsibility of SDG4, Education 2030 Agenda,’’ added the CS.
He also lauded KNATCOM for its achievements since it was reconstituted as a state corporation in 2013 including its contribution towards promotion of quality education in the country.
Prof. Magoha added that ‘’I am happy to note that your Strategic Plan (2019-2023) has incorporated the national, regional and global commitments including the Big Four Agenda, Continental Strategy for Education in Africa, Africa Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development.’’
The KNATCOM Secretary General, Dr. Evangeline Njoka said they will support the recently introduced Competency Based Curriculum and work with all the partner institutions to create a future generation of Kenyans who have the skills and knowledge adaptability that can thrive in a 21st century economy.
She said ‘’KNATCOM strives to promote a future of peace and stability, and a future with quality education and competent learners with relevant skills for the job market.’’
Dr. Njoka who is also the CEO said all their programmes are enablers to the Big Four Agenda of Manufacturing, Affordable housing, Universal health care and Food security.
The three-day workshop whose theme is ‘’Promoting Kenya’s Realization of National, Regional and Global Priorities was also addressed by the KNATCOM acting Chairman, Prof Fredrick Gravenir and former Kenya Ambassador to UNESCO, Dr. Mary Khimilu.
