The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called upon the Inspector General of Police to launch a thorough investigation into allegations of harassment of Journalists covering a security operation in Majengo, Gikomba, and Pumwani areas of Nairobi County.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms, the MCK Chief Executive Officer and Secretary to the Council, Mr. David Omwoyo, urged the IG to ensure those responsible for the unlawful acts on Wednesday, 5th March 2025, are held accountable.
According to Omwoyo, the journalists were reporting on demonstrations sparked by the alleged shooting of two teenage boys, which reportedly occurred on the night of March 4, 2025, in Majengo.
“The Council notes multiple incidents of harassment, temporary detention and assaults, with police accused of manhandling journalists and denying them access to affected areas,” said Omwoyo.
He said the violations of press freedom contravene the constitutional rights guaranteed to journalists and go against the journalists’ rights and privileges protected by law under the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and the Media Council Act, 2013.
“The public has a right to be informed about events affecting society, and such actions hinder that process,” stated Omwoyo.
The CEO said the Council stands in solidarity with the affected journalists and reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to defending media freedom and protecting the rights of journalists across Kenya.
