Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior has flagged off the 2023 national school games handball boys’ runners up Mbooni Boys to play at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSSA) games in Rwanda.
The competition will take place in Huye City from August 19 to 27 and teams from Kenya will play with Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan.
Mbooni reached the finals in Term One Games held in Eldoret falling 15-14 to Hospital Hill of Nairobi but booked a slot for the regional games.
“Congratulations to the team and the whole fraternity for what you have done, it’s an opportunity for you to be seen by potential employers while playing in Rwanda,” said Kilonzo at his Wote office on Monday evening while flagging off the team accompanied by the county officials.
He challenged the students to work smart both in academics and sports urging them to abstain from drugs and substance abuse because it harms their lives.
“Your success has nothing to do with your parents’ background, they are going to play in Rwanda but it’s your effort in school that has caused you to be given an opportunity to be sponsored to study and play in school,” noted Kilonzo
He said his administration is committed to nurturing young talent through sporting activities by improving sports infrastructure including playing fields.
The Governor added that the county in partnership with Nike will sponsor a special games tournament in the county.
