Mawego Polytechnic receives aquaculture equipment to empower Youth

Mawego National Polytechnic has received a state-of-the-art comprehensive production aquaculture and fisheries equipment to support the aquaculture training programme by equipping students with practical and hands-on experience in the latest practices.

The equipment that was procured at Sh40 million by the Young African Works in Kenya-TVET programme with the support of the Mastercard Foundation and the Colleges and Institutes of Canada (CICan) will provide practical training for aquaculture students, ensuring that they are industry ready.

The aquaculture equipment consisted of a complete production system from hatchery, breeding, harvesting, filleting, packaging and sales management.

State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training Principal Secretary Esther Muoria emphasised that the facility will serve both as a training hub and a production unit that will support the local businesses while at the same time boost food security.

According to Dr Muoria, Mawego is now recognised as a Centre of Excellence poised to empower the youth with the skills and knowledge needed to transform the aquaculture sector and secure food availability for future generations.

“The facility is designed to provide comprehensive training in responsible fish farming practices that are environmentally sustainable to enhance food production,” she said.

She reiterated the importance of equipping youths with skills in aquaculture especially in the lake region so that they can take fish farming to higher levels of nutrition and income generation.

The PS who commissioned the equipment noted that it was an investment that will strengthen collaborations with both local and international partners, highlighting that it will foster innovation, research and commercialization in fisheries through the engagement of stakeholder.

There are 39 students who are enrolled in aquaculture level three, four and five Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) courses.

On his part Dr John Abuto, Mawego Principal, affirmed that the aquaculture facility will change the community’s perception that fishing is a conventional activity and will instead see it as a viable career path.
