Boro market in Alego / Usonga Constituency will be upgraded to an urban centre, Central Alego Member of the County Assembly, Leonard Oriaro has said.
Oriaro said that already, the department of Lands and Physical Planning had kicked off the planning process for the market earmarked as one of the urban centres within Siaya municipality.
Speaking to the media at Boro trading centre, Oriaro whose area of representation includes the market, said that several markets within Central Alego ward such as Ndere and Segere have also been earmarked for elevation.
He said that the county government of Siaya, through the relevant department has already kicked off public participation exercises to get views from the stakeholders and residents on the process.
The MCA said that the elevation into an urban centre will enable Boro and other proposed centres to benefit from the multimillion shilling grants from the World Bank through the Kenya Urban Support Programme and called for support from the local residents.
Oriaro said that the elevation will see the markets benefit from improved infrastructure including paved streets, drainage systems and other amenities.
He however called on the county government to ensure that the process of urbanisation does not deprive the locals of their land, adding that any process of acquisition must follow the due process and the owners be compensated adequately.
