Mandera security agents hunt abductors of Cuban doctors

The hunt for abducted Cuban doctors involving a multi- security agency is still on.

The multi-security agents are KDF and police sectors.

The doctors, attached at the Mandera county hospital were abducted on Friday at 9.00am by suspected Al shabaab militants.

The two medics were on their way to work from home when they were attacked at the busy Banisa stage at the heart of Mandera town.

The assailants blocked their vehicle with a saloon car before alighting and opening fire on their bodyguards, killing one of them instantly.

“It is unfortunate that one of the two officers lost his life in line of duty protecting the lives of the two medics,” area governor Ali Roba observed, and further asked security agents in the region to expedite measures to rescue the two doctors.

The two, Dr. Landy Rodruguez Hernandez and Dr.Assel Harrera Correa were part of the 100 Cuban doctors team involved in an exchange program between the governments of Kenya and Cuba.

The governor said in a statement; “While I believe that all efforts are being done by our government to pursue the attackers, we would like to appeal to them to do whatever it takes to save the lives of our Cuban doctors and bring them back from captivity.”

It is not yet clear how the assailants managed to drive over the fenced border with Somalia.

The two doctors were experienced surgeons attending to complicated surgeries from as far as Somalia and Ethiopia patients.
