In a bid to support local talent among youth and school-going students, Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif presided over the official launch of The Generation of Today and 99 Other Poems, a collection of contemporary poetry authored by 15-year-old Abdullahi Alim Hajji.
Master Hajji, who is a student at Mandera Secondary School, in his work addresses a broad spectrum of societal themes, including marriage, religion, politics, love, life, death, and the supernatural.
The budding author has previously co-authored acclaimed anthologies such as Boundless Voices and The Voice of Poets, cementing his position as a rising literary figure in the region.
During his address to parents and students, Governor Khalif reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to nurturing and developing local talent.
He pledged continued support for the creative industry and intellectual pursuits and reaffirmed the county’s dedication to promoting education for all (Elimu kwa Wote).
“We are determined to create opportunities for our youth, empowering them to explore and excel in their talents,” said Governor Khalif.
“Our government is committed to rolling out ambitious programmes aimed at equipping young people with the tools to improve their lives and secure a brighter future.”
Elyas Abdi, the Director General in the Ministry of Education, urged parents and the community to prioritise education as the foundation for progress.
“In today’s world, education is indispensable,” said Elyas Abdi. “It equips children not only for future success but also to navigate daily challenges. It is the cornerstone of personal and community development.”
The book launch was celebrated as a milestone for Mandera County, signalling the emergence of a vibrant literary and artistic culture.
Mandera County administration plans to enhance library facilities and roll out programmes aimed at cultivating a reading culture among students.
The event was attended by a diverse audience, including parents, students, educators, and government officials, and served to underscore the transformative potential of education and the arts in shaping a progressive society.
The launch of The Generation of Today and 99 Other Poems marks a new chapter for Mandera, positioning it as a hub for emerging talent and innovation.
