In a move to improve healthcare standards, the Mandera County Government on Monday commissioned a fully equipped theatre at the Lafey Subcounty Referral Hospital in Lafey town.
The new facility is expected to benefit more than 3,000 residents, providing life-saving surgical services close to residents.
The theatre, the first of its kind in the Sub County, underscores the county’s commitment to expanding healthcare access.
In addition to the new theatre, the hospital has been upgraded, including the refurbishment of the maternity and pediatric wards, in line with enhancing the quality and range of services available to patients.
Speaking at the launch, Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif confirmed that operations in the new theatre would commence immediately, allowing residents to access critical healthcare services without traveling for long distances to Mandera Town or Elwak, especially given the region’s security challenges along the Kenya-Somalia border.
“I encourage the residents of Lafey to make the best use of the hospital,” said Governor Khalif, emphasizing the importance of utilizing local healthcare facilities for routine and emergency care.
Lafey MP Mohamed Abdikheir expressed gratitude to the county government, noting that the new theatre would greatly alleviate healthcare burden for residents.
He pledged to work closely with the County Administration to support further development in the area.
