Manda trustee to establish  campus in Homa Bay County

Residents of Kanam area in Rachuonyo West Sub County have finally allowed the establishment of a university that will provide a variety of courses for students.

Initially, there was reluctance among the residents to allocate the necessary 150 acres of land to Manda Trustee Kenya for the construction of the Manda university but after a public participation forum, many changed their minds, recognising the potential benefits of the initiative.

Charles Otieno Ayieko, chairman of the Homa Hills Development Organisation, described this decision as unprecedented, noting that it required extensive discussion among the residents to reach a consensus to collaborate with Manda Trustee Kenya.

“People expressed their views, and the majority agreed. We have come together to partner with Manda for the benefit of our community,” he stated.

Ayieko mentioned that the county government had signed an investment agreement with Manda Trustee Kenya in February, 2024 to establish a campus in Homa Bay, with Kanam being identified as a suitable location for that purpose.

Speaking after the public forum, Ayieko emphasised that the locals were initially unwilling to part with the 150 acres of idle land adding, It was only after they were informed about the significant advantages of this initiative that they agreed.

Manda University, currently registered as Manda Trustee, will function as a faith-based institution that will offer different programmes including law, public health, medicine, education, and business and leadership.

Jacinta Ogada, the Deputy County Commissioner, Rachuonyo West, stated that they are progressing step by step with this being the initial phase, and expressed optimism about moving forward in unity.

Phoebe Otieno, a local resident, said that this initiative represents a significant milestone for them as a community.

“We are thrilled as residents of Kanam because Manda University will greatly benefit our people, allowing our children to pursue their education without having to leave the region,” she added.
