A middle aged man identified as Abdiweli Adan Noor on Saturday night went berserk and repeatedly stabbed his wife to death in Mandera town in a tragic case of domestic violence.
The assailant is said to have stabbed the woman more than 20 times making it impossible for neighbours to save her life.
Neboi ward MCA Abdi Kula blamed increased incidents of drugs and alcohol use among men to a spike in crime in the region.
He said Abdiweli is known for excessive drinking of alcohol and urged police to scale up efforts to combat drug abuse and sale of alcohol.
Nominated MCA Hindia Hussein mourned the widow and her six children who have been left orphaned saying men have abdicated their domestic responsibilities due to excessive alcohol drinking and drug abuse.
Handima Adan, a neighbour said the assailant locked up the house behind him after killing the woman and went into hiding.
Police were forced to break into the house to retrieve the deceased’s body after neighbours reported the incident today morning.
Adan said the deceased used to be beaten daily and added quarreling in the house used to be the order of the day.
She called on other women to report cases of gender violence to police or chiefs in good time to avoid a repeat of a similar incident.
Abdiweli has since been arrested and is in police custody while the body of the deceased has been moved from Bulla Jamhuria to Mandera hospital mortuary.
