Man drowns in River Nyando

A fishing expedition in River Nyando in Nyando Sub County on Tuesday turned tragic after a 26-year-old man identified as Samson Omondi drowned.

Efforts by fellow fishermen to rescue him were unsuccessful and the incident left residents in deep shock after the tragedy.

The victim who hails from Ahero had gone fishing with his two friends when he slipped into the deep end of the river while trying to cast the net in the water.

Nyando Sub County Police Commander Lawrence Matete confirmed the incident and said the deceased was carried away by heavy currents in the river.

The river which is known for developing powerful currents at times, is usually used by the locals as a source of livelihood.

According to an eye witness Nelson Odeny, the deceased went into the deeper side which is believed to have big fish but slid.

“One fisherman dived in to save his life but it was too late since he had been carried away by the dreaded waves along the river,” narrated Odeny.

The area police boss has asked the locals to be careful while fishing at the River to avert many deaths associated with the river.

The body of the deceased has been removed to Ahero Sub County mortuary to await a postmortem examination.
