Man commits suicide, villagers lynch another in Sabatia

Police in Vihiga are investigating the death of a 27 year old man whose body was found hanging from a rope inside his bedroom at Viyalo village in Sabatia Sub County.

Vihiga Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Mr. Justin Nyagah said the incident which occurred on Monday night.

Speaking to Kenya News Agency (KNA) on Tuesday, Nyagah said the incident, which has left villagers shocked, was discovered by the deceased’s next door neighbours who raised the alarm.

Security officers rushed to the scene where they removed the body to Vihiga County Referral Hospital morgue for autopsy.

“Preliminary investigations indicate the deceased, Hezan Olungu, might have committed suicide,” said Nyagah. The late Olungu was staying alone at the time of the incident.

“Security officers have launched investigations as we attempt to unravel the cause of the death,” added Nyagah.

In a separate incident an irate crowd of villagers at Enderi market in Sabatia Sub County attacked and lynched a young man who they accused of stealing from them.

“The villagers took the law into their hands before assaulting the young man identified as Nelson Kidiga,” reported Nyagah.

Police officers went to the scene where they rescued the man who was however pronounced dead while undergoing treatment at the Vihiga County Referral Hospital.

The OCPD has however strongly warned area residents against taking the
law into their hands whenever dealing with suspects.

“We appeal to members of public to report to the nearest security agents any individuals whom they suspect of engaging in criminal activities,” urged Nyagah.
