A man accused of stabbing to death his estranged wife Mary Wanjiku on Tuesday morning at Oloolua in Kajiado county has committed suicide.
Daniel Nyagah, the suspect, managed to escape from police custody while being escorted to court and ran towards the market area where he grabbed a vegetable vendor’s knife and stabbed himself in the stomach.
According to eye-witnesses, Nyagah attempted to attack passersby and police officers who were pursuing him but the officers shot at him and managed to subdue him.
Kajiado North Sub-County Police Commander Rashid Mohammed confirmed the incident adding that the officers rushed the suspect to Ngong Sub-County Hospital where he was given first aid before being referred to Kenyatta National Hospital but he succumbed on the way.
“The suspect managed to escape police custody while being escorted to court. He ran to the market, grabbed a knife from a vendor and stabbed himself on the stomach and tried to attack the officers who were pursuing him. The officers shot at him thereby managing to subdue him.” said Mohammed.
Meanwhile, friends and neighbours of Wanjiku were still in disbelief at the tragic turn of events. They said Wanjiku was a very hardworking and social lady and were greatly saddened by her murder.
Neighbors described Nyagah as a quiet and calm man who played musical instruments in church.
According to Joseph Kamau, a neighbor, Nyagah and Wanjiku had been embroiled in constant domestic wrangles which had resulted in Wanjiru moving out of their marital home with their three children barely a week ago.
Nyagah is said to have suspected his wife of engaging in an extra-marital affair and this had been a source of their constant wrangles.
He is reported to have followed Wanjiku to her new place of aboard on Tuesday morning and stabbed her severally before escaping.
Police traced him to his hide-out in Kibiko forest on Wednesday after he had unsuccessfully tried to commit suicide by taking poison and arrested him.
