Police in Kitui have arrested a 19 year-old man who slashed his 18 year-old girlfriend to death in a bizarre incident that has left residents of Katithini village in shock.
Confirming the incident, Sicily Gatiti, Kitui Central Sub-County Police Commander said that the suspect John Mutinda caused the death of his girlfriend identified as Shiro Murimi using a panga before midnight on Tuesday.
“When we visited the scene, we were able to recover a bloodied panga that was used in the killing. The slain woman had deep panga cuts on her head, sustained serious injuries and lay in a pool of blood,” said the police officer.
According to Gatiti, police have been granted 14 days by a Kitui Court to hold the suspect as they conclude investigations before charging him in court on May 22, 2019.
‘The body of the deceased was moved to Kitui Level 5 Hospital mortuary pending a post mortem report,’ said the Sub-County Police Commander.
At the home of Mutinda, scores of villagers gathered in groups as they come to terms following the gruesome murder of Shiro.
It is reported that the two were cohabiting for some time since 2018 before parting ways until two weeks ago when they reunited.
Florence Mutinda, the suspect’s mother was distraught as she fought back tears to try to come to terms with the macabre death of her prospective daughter-in-law.
“My son knocked at my window a few minutes past 10 pm. Mum, I have killed Shiro, please take me to the police station,” said Mrs. Mutinda amid sobs.
She said that the boy’s father alerted Misewani Sub-Location Assistant Chief, Musili Muoki about the incident and later called the police.
