Controversial Malindi Member of Parliament Asha Jumwa will spend the night at Port police cell in Mombasa County as she awaits today’s court ruling in which prosecution wants her detained for 21 days.
Jumwa and four others are accused of causing chaos which led to the shooting of ODM supporter Ngumbao Jola to death.
The MP was arrested early Wednesday at her Kakuyuni home in Malindi in Kilifi and taken to Port police cell before being charged at Mombasa court in the afternoon.
According to police records, Jumwa arrived at the home of ODM candidate for October 17 (Thursday) Ganda ward by-election Reuben Katana in a convoy of three vehicles on Tuesday claiming the aspirant was conducting campaign meeting after the deadline given by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The confrontation turned ugly and led to the shooting of Jola who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Malindi County Hospital.
However, Katana refuted the claims saying the meeting was organized to plan for how to distribute the party’s agents in polling stations.
Despite Jumwa being elected on ODM ticket she was spearheading campaign for an Independent candidate Abdul Omar whose election was nullified due to irregularities.
The court will on Thursday decide whether or not to rule in favour of the prosecution, which seek to have Jumwa detained for 21 days to allow them more time for investigations.
