The County Government of Makueni will provide start-up kits to skilled youths to enable them to initiate an income-generating project to be self-reliant, area Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has said.
While noting that jobs are scarce, Mutula said the provision of the kits to the youths will make the youth busy, hence avoiding joining criminal activities that will impact their lives negatively.
“We shall give start-up kits to the youths who have skills to enable them to initiate an income-generating project to be self-reliant besides improving their lives,” said Mutula during the 1st Vocational Training Centres Skills Exhibition held at Spring Hill Kwa Kakulu Training Centre in Nzaui Subcounty.
“To ensure the youths have something to do so that they don’t join criminal activities that will impact their lives negatively,” noted the governor.
During the event, he disclosed that they also have a donor who is ready to sponsor the youths with start-up kits and called upon more young people to join the Vocational Training Centres (VCCs) to acquire skills that can enable them to seek jobs globally.
Mutula further said that equipping the youth with appropriate skills will help the county and Kenya at large since many young people will not depend on the governments for employment opportunities, which are scarce.
“Equipping the youths with the right skills, we shall give them hope and seek job opportunities outside Makueni. We shall transform Kenya by equipping the young people with skills, and they shall help their families,” he said.
“Not all of them can be employed by the government as there are no available jobs. This journey in Makueni is part of our global movement for sustainable development,” posed the governor.
Speaking at the same exhibition, the executive Committee Member (ECM) for ICT, Education and Internship, Elizabeth Muli, said they will continue to nurture the young people to acquire skills to enable them to be employable.
During the event, the different VTCs displayed the various items they have made in a number of departments, like masonry, welding and fabrication, leatherwork, and tailoring, to mention a few.
On his part, Makueni County Commissioner (CC) Henry Wafula said they are addressing a few incidents of insecurity in the area to ensure residents are safe.
