About 2,500 vulnerable households in Majengo informal settlement, Nanyuki town have benefitted from relief food to cushion them from famine.
Speaking during the distribution exercise in Nanyuki town on Monday, Laikipia East Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Muli said the donations were from a Nanyuki-based club, Moran Lodge and Grill Bar and Restaurant.
“We are very thankful for this food distribution initiative to the less fortunate from Moran Lodge. They have been carrying out this activity in the past two years,” said Muli.
He said that residents were undergoing famine, a situation that needed to be addressed, and at the same time appealed to the business community from the region to intervene to support residents affected by hunger.
The DCC said that Kwa Mbuzi, Likii, and Majengo informal settlements residents were in dire need of relief food and called for partnership from all stakeholders.
“We are experiencing hunger in Laikipia and there are areas where people are severely affected. Want to appeal to other traders from our region to be mindful of the less privileged. Let’s partner and support our people,” urged the DCC.
Muli further cautioned residents against being conned by people pretending to register them in the hustler fund initiative.
He revealed the rogue individuals were demanding Sh300 in order to enrol residents in the hustler fund program which was a criminal offense.
He said some have already been arrested and are waiting to be arraigned in court.
Moran Lodge and Grill bar and restaurant director Robert Kabata said that Laikipia had not experienced rainfall in the past seasons which forced them to donate food packages to the elderly and vulnerable residents which included maize flour to cushion them from hunger. He said the maize flour would last for a period of a week.
Mary Wairimu, one of the beneficiaries said that it was a sigh of relief since they were undergoing hardship.
On her part, Margret Muthoni said that she was thankful for the maize package donated to them by the Moran Lodge, Grill, and Restaurant.
