A Ngong law court has released a suspected rapist on a Ksh 500,000 bond after he denied the charges.
Nkondio, Torigei Sakoi, a man suspected to have raped a woman in Shompole, Magadi ward, denied the charges of rape and indecent act.
He was arrested on February 14th on suspicion of allegedly raping a woman aged 26 years old at Shompole West sublocation, in Shompole swamp on Thursday, 13th February.
He denied the charges before senior Principal Magistrate Charles Kutwa; the suspect, who is facing rape and indecent act charges, denied the allegations.
The magistrate has ordered that the suspect undergo tests to determine his age, as he lacks essential documents such as the Birth certificate and the national Identity card.
The case will be heard again on 6th March 2025.
Rape and defilement cases have been on the rise in Magadi since December last year and many women from several locations in the area lament that a serial rapist, Olongui Tukai, popularly known as ‘Lorgali’ has been raping and assaulting women, defiling girls and young children in the area since then, and has never been apprehended to date.
Addressing the press at the Ngong Law Courts, human rights defenders from Kajiado urged the government to act swiftly to bring all perpetrators of Gender Based Violence (GBV) to book.
“I urge the police to act swiftly and apprehend all the suspects as we are bordering Tanzania and the culprits may cross the border easily, evading arrest,” said Jeniffer Juma, a human rights activist.
The activists also want increased police presence in the area to enhance security in addition to improved network coverage, as some regions have poor connectivity, making it difficult to report perpetrators promptly, especially in cases of sexual violence.
Magadi Police Station Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Daniel Adongo noted that the station has so far received five cases: 3 for sexual gender-based violence and 2 for defilement this year.
While visiting Magadi on Monday, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Gender, Anne Wang’ombe, warned all perpetrators of Gender Based Violence that their days were numbered and that no stone will be left unturned until all of them were brought to book.
