The Law Society of Kenya has launched a free legal awareness week to offer free legal advice to residents of Machakos and South Eastern branch.
The LSK Chairman South Eastern branch Makau Mutua while speaking to the press at the Machakos law courts, said that they are offering free legal aid to all residents from Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Kajiado and Garissa Counties.
The Chairman urged all residents to come forward and receive the free legal services which only happen once a year all over the country and is a way of giving back to the society.
“We are offering free legal aid to all courts that are in Machakos, Kitui, Garissa, Kajiado and Makueni and lawyers will be present to offer any legal help needed by the residents,” said Makau.
He pointed out that even though they are offering free legal aid, there are cases that can be solved out of court and through mediation.
On her part Machakos Lands and Environment Court Judge Annet Nyukuri said that the lawyers offering free aid are highly qualified and have mastered the law so residents should seek their services.
Judge Nyukuri said that people should also find an alternative justice system because not everything has to be solved in court, some can be solved through arbitration which will help save time and incurring legal costs.
“The courts cannot solve everything; some cases can be resolved through mediation and other alternative justice systems,” added Judge Nyukuri.
She further noted that residents who have not been able to acquire services from a lawyer or their case files have been missing, to write to the ombudsman who will forward the case to the judges.
