Losses as heavy rainfall is expected to persist in Murang’a

As heavy rainfall above 50mm in 24 hours continues to pound across several parts of the country, waves of destruction have been reported in some areas across Murang’a south sub county.

In Maragua area the banks of river Maragua have broken leading to destruction of crops with some having been washed downstream.

In Kenol’s Kagaa and Kimorori areas, business premises are flooded while residential areas have become inaccessible to the residents.

The residents have indicated that it has become habitual for flooding every time there is heavy rains and are calling on the government to move with speed and get a permanent sustainable solution before more losses are recorded.

At the Klassique hotel, we find the premises completely flooded with the rain water reaching knee length.

The premises manager Patrick Maina laments that their business has been greatly affected by the rains as no one can access it leading to losses of over Sh70,000 daily.

“We have been forced to scale down our workers to just 2 from 10 because no business is going on, the whole place is flooded and customers cannot access our premises,” he said

He argues that a permanent solution ought to be found because it is not the first time it is flooding.

James Ngoome, a boda boda rider, notes that the flooding has affected their movement in the transport industry because many areas have been rendered inaccessible.

“We have been forced to wade through the flood water to ferry our customers to their homes which is very risky and we appeal to the concerned authorities to get us a permanent solution,” he said

Several business premises remained closed Friday even as the Meteorological department predicted that heavy rain with sunny intervals is expected to go on in the upper, middle and lower zone of Murang’a county for a week up to April 14.

Thunderstorms are also likely to occur with temperatures ranging between 24 to 27 degrees celsius.
