USAID-NAWIRI project has donated Sh157 million fishing gear and equipment including twines, manila ropes, fishing floaters and hooks to benefit about 1200 fisher folks in Turkana county.
The initiative is targeting various Beach Management Units (BMUs) along Lake Turkana including Lomekwi, Lobolo, Napeget, and Moruong’or.
The project aims to enhance the capacity of BMUs in sustainable fish production and management practices and not just providing fishing equipment.
The project Director Hussein Abdile emphasized that their objective is to empower local communities along the Lake and improve on their livelihoods.
He said this will also enhance fish trade and create employment and investment opportunities for the residents of Lomekwi.
Others present during the function was the county Director of Fisheries Adengo David, Director of Administration Joram Ewoton, and an Assistant Director at the State Department for Blue Economy and Fisheries Kennedy Opiyo.
