Likuyani Member of Parliament Dr. Enoch Kibunguchy has expressed dissatisfaction with the price of dry maize offered by the government.
Addressing residents at Mtoni in Nzoia ward during a funds drive in aid of Mtoni Vocational Training College on Sunday, he said it was disappointing for the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to buy a 90 Kilogrammes (kg) bag at Sh. 2,500.
Kibunguchy said the cost of production of maize was high and the farmers are supposed to sell a 90-kg at Sh. 3,000 in order to break even.
The MP promised to table a motion aimed at reviewing the price once parliament resumes on 9th February, 2021. “This price excludes cess which after being removed, the farmer will receive less than Sh.2, 500 per bag,” he said.
The legislator urged the government to avail subsidized farm inputs in time as the planting season fast approaches.
