Legislator pushes for environment fund increments

Kasipul MP Charles Ongondo has welcomed the proposal to increase allocations for environmental conservation.

The MP says the legislation proposal by Cabinet Secretary for Environment Soipan Tuya to raise the allocation from two to five per cent is already in parliament.

The fund meant to promote environmental conservation is currently at 2 per cent of the amount of the NG-CDF fund allocated to each constituency.

The MP was speaking during a tree planting exercise supported by Compassion International (CI), Kenya, at God Nyango Forest, covering 34.7 hectares.

He said he was privileged in the 12th parliament to sit in the committee on environment, making him passionate about tree planting to ensure the larger land mass, especially in God Nyango, is covered by trees.

The MP thanked partners in environmental matters, among them Equity Bank, which he said every year donates about 10,000 seedlings for planting in schools within Kasipul constituency.

“If you go to some of the schools within the constituency, you can spot them having a small forest through the bank,” he said.

In line with government policies, the MP urged the residents to plant at least 10 per cent of the trees on their homesteads. Adding to that, they can plant any tree species, including fruit trees.

Newton Midamba, the CI official, said they have a two-year campaign in Homabay County to plant one million trees.
