Legislator condemns rising cases of mob justice

Ndhiwa Member of Parliament Martin Owino has condemned rising cases of mob justice in the subcounty, some of which have claimed lives of innocent victims.

Owino said all suspects must be reported to the police for the law to take its course and justice to prevail.

The legislator cited a recent incident in which a butcher and his driver were killed near Kobodo trading center after they bought a cow from a local farmer.

During the incident, a butcher identified as Bob Ochieng bought a cow and engaged one Kevin Odero to ferry the cow in his Probox vehicle to his butchery in Sikewadhi trading center.

But a mob that suspected the two of being cattle thieves attacked the two and killed them on the spot before torching their vehicle.

Owino spoke on Monday at Malela Village during the 90th birthday celebration for his mother, Margaret Obunga Owino.

He said that cases of mob justice must come to an end to avert further loss of innocent lives.

“It is very sad that we are mourning the deaths of two businessmen who were working hard to help in growing our economy. The deceased had families they were taking care of. Who is going to play their roles?” Owino asked.

He told residents to be cautious before they punish anybody suspected to have committed a crime.

The MP said there is need for foolproof evidence of crimes committed by suspects and if so, the suspects should be handed over to police.

“Let the people verify the crime allegations properly and if there is evidence, they should hand the suspects to police. Police will take legal action. Let us stop killing innocent people,” he added.

Owino urged residents to collaborate with police in weeding out crime in the area.
