Legislator champions education to all

Kiambu County Women Representative Anne Muratha, has empowered students by disbursing over 11 million in bursaries and scholarships.

Additionally, cheques worth Sh10 million for women groups, youth and PWDs empowerment groups were issued.

Muratha, while delivering the goodies at the Kiambu Primary School said the full scholarships was going to students who are in dire need, ensuring that they have the opportunity to pursue their studies without financial barriers.

She told KNA, that the distribution is unlike the funding for students under HELB which sometimes sees even those who may not merit receive money.

“These current bursaries and scholarships are specifically intended for the most deserving and financially needy students”, she said.

Muratha supported Chief Justice Martha Koome’s view that all bursaries should be consolidated to make education free for everyone. However, she added that before achieving that goal, it is important to explore what actions can be taken now.

Additionally, she has called upon teachers to refrain from participating in the planned strikes, emphasizing that there is an ongoing economic crisis countrywide, meaning not all challenges can be addressed at once.

“The reality is that teachers and doctors are not easily compensated for their invaluable contributions. We primarily value their dedication to humanitarian work but it is essential for them to recognize that both the government and the President are committed to the nation’s welfare”, she said.

As a member of the educational committee, she assured the residents that they are actively working to address the concerns raised by educators emphasizing that the government is listening to their needs.

The day school and high school students were awarded varying amounts based on their performances, with allocations set as Sh7, 000, Sh5, 000, Sh8, 000 and Sh10, 000.

University students received a uniform support of Sh10, 000 and Sh30,000 scholarships for those both in university and high school.

In total, approximately 800 students are slated to receive this financial assistance, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and supporting academic excellence.

Muratha called on the need for unity and collaboration during these challenging times, as the community works together to foster an environment conducive to positive change.

The event was graced by the Garissa Woman Rep Hon Amina Udgoon, accompanied by some Kiambu Members of County Assembly.
