Teso North legislator Oku Kaunya has appealed to parents not to hide their physically and mentally handicapped children at home but rather take them to special schools.
He said it is a disservice to lock the children at home yet they can be assisted and enabled to live a normal life.
Kaunya made the appeal at St.Jude Malaba Special School where he handed over 10 mobility devices worthy Sh.250, 000 donated by Health Care Direct Kenya Limited and the Rotary Club of Nakuru.
Learners from three special schools: St.Jude Malaba, Kakapel and Kakemer benefited from the devices.
Kaunya lauded the two donors for the aid saying the devices will play a critical role in transforming the lives of the beneficiaries.
St.Jude Malaba Special School head teacher Praxides Ekisa expressed gratitude towards the donation which she said will enable the children move and perform other duties independently.
“We are very happy because the MP has remembered our special schools which are in dire need of support.
“I appeal to parents not to hide the affected children at home. Take them to school. We have so many individuals and organizations out there ready to assist both the parents and the children,” she said noting that some of the devices are very expensive for the parents.
Parents to the beneficiaries said the donation is a big relieve to them as most of them cannot afford the mobility devices.
They said their children will now be able to move including going to school and church without bothering anyone to carry them on the back.
