Women Members of the Trans Nzoia County Assembly are working on a piece of legislation to establish a special kitty in county government to provide sanitary pads to all students from poor backgrounds.
Led by nominated MCA Ms Milcah Sugut, the leaders said they will work in conjunction with other women rights crusaders in the region to ensure that the girls were provided with hygiene pads.
According to Ms Rugut, a special kitty will be established through a legislation that will set aside funds through affirmative action which will address these challenges.
The women leaders and other partners spoke while marking the world menstrual hygiene day at Tuwan Girls High School where they donated sanitary pads and hygiene items to students.
Trans Nzoia Women caucus director Ms Immaculate Shamala said that the girl child faced challenges adding that some of them have dropped out of school due to lack of sanitary towels.
“We as women truly understand what it means to have the cycle yet you lack pads. We need a programme that will salvage girls from humble backgrounds to ensure they don’t lose class hours,” said Mrs Shamala.
Other stakeholders included Khetia supermarket who also donated the towels.
The supermarkets’ marketing manager Fredrick Ochieng asked other partners to come on board and assist girls from humble backgrounds.
The school’s Principal Ms Mary Osungu said the day school has put up a modern bathroom to enable students at the school to keep clean whenever they are experiencing the biological cycle.
