West Pokot leaders have called on the government to end illegal gold mining within the county, emphasising the need for proper documentation and adherence to the Mining Act.
Led by Member of Parliament for Sigor constituency Peter Lochakapong, the leaders voiced concerns after meeting with County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif, where they emphasised that mining operations must be properly licensed and should not involve machinery for commercial purposes unless authorised.
MP Lochakapong clarified that while traditional methods of mineral extraction are acceptable for local communities, commercial mining, especially using machinery, is not permitted without the necessary legal permits.
He warned against individuals misguiding local communities to grant land for mining activities without full awareness, stressing that such practices could lead to exploitation and illegal activities.
The leaders also urged the county commissioner to be vigilant in monitoring illegal mining activities and to safeguard the community from fraudulent practices.
MP Lochakapong highlighted the importance of supporting government projects and initiatives, calling for collaboration among county leaders and the office of the county commissioner to address development issues and expose illegal activities that affect residents.
In the context of the Christmas season, the leaders emphasized the importance of peace and security, acknowledging neighbouring counties such as Turkana and Elgeyo Marakwet for their peaceful coexistence.
MP Lochakapong expressed optimism that with the appointment of Kipchumba Murkomen as Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security, peace will be restored in the Kerio Valley, ending the perennial conflicts.
Other leaders, including Mark Lomunokol, the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Sports Kenya; Samuel Moroto, the MP for the Kapenguria constituency; and West Pokot Senator Julius Murgor, joined in calling for support of national leadership and a collective effort to ensure peace and security across the county.
Senator Murgor specifically called for an end to illegal gold mining and the demarcation of land without community consent, warning that such actions could lead to conflict if not well addressed.
