Leaders applaud IFAD’s proactive role in environmental conservation

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi have commended IFAD’s active role in environmental conservation in the County saying the agency’s initiatives have been able to transform the environment in the county.

Speaking at Njukiri area in Embu, where the two leaders had accompanied the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) President Dr. Alvaro Lario during the inspection of IFAD projects, the two leaders noted the commendable results since IFAD ventured in environment conservation at Njukiri forest in Embu.

“Out of IFAD participation in environment conservation in this area, we can be able to see how it has been able to transform the environment in this area,” said Linturi.

The CS also pointed out the role the development projects that IFAD has been implementing in Kenya which are beneficial to the lives of Kenyans.

“IFAD projects have changed the lives of our farmers, we appreciate the support it has given to our people especially through the Upper Tana Water Project,” he said.

Governor Cecily Mbarire congratulated IFAD for playing a key role in small development projects in the lower Mbeere saying that the small development projects have uplifted the living standards of people in the lower Mbeere.

She disclosed that IFAD is sponsoring value addition to green grams in the lower Mbeere and that the project has improved the living standards of the people in this area by creating a source of revenue for them.

IFAD President Dr. Alvaro Lario revealed that the organization has invested $93 million (about Sh10 billion) in a span of ten years in preserving the ecosystem at Njukiri forest in Embu.

He said that the organization is committed to helping improve environmental conservation in Embu County.

“Njukiri project is very dear to us and we have been working on it for a span of ten years, the project that includes planting of trees has really helped this community,” said IFAD President Dr. Alvaro Lario.

IFAD is also implementing Kirimari Rutune Community Irrigation Project that is aimed at assisting households in Kirimari ward Manyatta constituency Embu.
