At least 3,571 youth in Lakipia County will be recruited in the National Hygiene Programme (NHP) exercise dubbed “Kazi Mtaani” this week to cushion them against the effects of COVID-19.
Speaking on Monday while Chairing the County NHP meeting in his office, area County Commissioner (CC), Daniel Nyameti said the youth to be recruited in the six months’ exercise will be involved in improving hygienic standards in the county to curb the spread of the killer virus in the area.
Nyameti said out that out of the 3,571 youth to be recruited from Laikipia West, Laikipia East and Nyahururu Sub Counties, 223 will be supervisors.
“The programme is focused on recruiting vulnerable youths to cushion them from the effects of Covid-19,” Nyameti noted.
He said the exercise which is an initiative of the national government is aimed at creating jobs for the youth and cushion them from the impacts of the corona virus.
The administrator said they will be engaged in bush clearing, garbage collections, street cleaning, drainage and sewerage unblocking among others.
“The programme is at the same time, aimed at creating awareness among the communities on the need to on maintain a clean environment at all times,” the CC said.
Nyameti said the cash earned by the youths involved in the programme, will help them initiate income generating activities which will in turn earn them a living after the programme is over.
